Bella is a healthy 10 yr old pure-bred Beagle. She is an affectionate, extremely sweet, calm, gentle soul, who enjoys spending time with her humans. She loves to be loved. Bella enjoys going for short walks and loves to ride in the car. She is also very content just sitting by your side. A fenced-in yard would be great! Although Bella gets along with other dogs and cats she prefers to be your one and only. Bella would do great with someone who is looking for a companion. She enjoys being with people and has a very pleasing disposition. Bella has already been spayed. Bella is currently living with a foster mom in Westport, CT. If you’d like to meet sweet Bella, please call Patricia at 917-865-6380.

Will it be Baby, the miniature poodle rescued at 11 years of age that now provides therapy services at an adult day care center? Will it be Bella Rose, the always-welcoming yellow lab that is “the thread” that keeps her family together? Lola was born on a sheep farm in western Wales and lived with her family in London before she made the long trip to be with her family in Westport and romp in Winslow Park. Is she the one? It could be Bruce, the 150-pound lab-Newfoundland mix that wins fans wherever he goes. Bruce was nominated by a friend of the family, a friend that is actually allergic to dogs but overlooks a little sneezing and coughing for the happiness brought by a hug from Bruce. Of course it could always be China, a beautiful chow-mix rescued in Florida after being born with severe arthritis that now walks gracefully along the beaches and parks of Westport due to the tender care provided by her rescuer. And then there is Blue Bear….Blue bear is a rescue from Westport Animal Control. Luck was on his side when he came to us. He found good food, vet care (vaccinations/neuter surgery) and a Westport family that in their nomination essay proclaim that Blue Bear “brings much love and happiness to our whole family”.

Please join Westport Animal Shelter Advocates (WASA) on Thursday, December 15, 4:00, Town Hall main lobby for the ribbon ceremony for 2012’s Westport Top Dog so that at long last the Top Dog of Westport will be “crowned”. The ceremony will be presided over by Westport’s First Selectman Gordon Joseloff. Earlier this year WASA sponsored a Top Dog contest inviting Westport residents to submit a short essay and photo along with a donation for their Top Dog. Judging by was held at the beginning of November by a panel of judges (Bud Siegel, Hank Herman and Patricia Strauss). The finalists will be in attendance for the ceremony on 12/15. In addition, WASA will be presenting its first Second Chance award for that dog and family that truly represent the spirit of WASA in regard to providing a second chance for a homeless dog. Sarah, 2011’s Westport Top Dog will be in attendance as well to say an official goodbye to her reign as Top Dog.

We will be kicking off a toy and treat drive as the ole’ cupboard is bare at Westport Animal Control. By a show of paws from our current residents, it appears that Puperoni and peanut butter treats are the resounding favorite.

Thank you. We hope you will be willing to be part of this fun event.

William was in a CT animal control facility for over a year, just waiting for someone to discover him – which is just what a WASA volunteer did one day in May. William has epilepsy and requires daily medication. That fact alone kept him from finding a home as he is extremely handsome and wonderful with people, other dogs, cats….just a swell boy. We thank the Vornkahl family of Westport that added him to their family with their rescue shepherd mix Fred and rescue cat Skeeter. All are living together quite harmoniously. Will is pictured here on what we assume is his new favorite spot in his new home.

Congratulations to the Ross family of Westport, CT, upon the return of their beloved Bandit after being missing since June of 2010. When a “cavapoo” disappeared from her home in Westport, the owners offered a $500, then $1,500 and finally $5,000. No results. On Friday, October 7, 2011, Westport resident and WASA president Julie Loparo and her daughter Callie spotted a small dog threading through traffic on Riverside Avenue. They pulled over to the side of the road, got out of their vehicle and scooped up the frightened creature and brought her to Westport Animal Control. She was dirty, matted and appeared to have had a litter of puppies at some time. Amy Scarella, a WASA volunteer, arranged for and then took the dog for a much-needed grooming donated by Greenfield Hills Grooming. Afterwards, Amy showed a before and after picture of the displaced pooch to an acquaintance. The woman peered at the cell phone image and gasped. “This looks just like my friend’s dog that went missing two years ago.” Miraculously, it was the friend’s dog. Bandit was soon reunited with her overjoyed family. At “press time” the Ross family is considering making a donation to WASA to pay it forward for their good fortune and help WASA with its mission to assist homeless dogs in Fairfield County.

WASA is in the process of raising additional funds to upgrade the town-installed kennel doors and the installation of a fire emergency alert system to allow for better security and safety. (Featured in the photo are Susie Valentine Collins of Sitting Pretty Dog Training and Victor Gonzales, Contractor and Owner of V & H Fences.) For more information regarding WASA, please visit www.westportwasa.org or email wasa1@optonline.net.

Just My Dog

He’s just my dog.
He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds;
My other ears that hear above the winds.
He is the part of me that can reach out into the seas.
He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being.
By the way he rests against my leg.
By the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile.
By the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy abound.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another person.
With him, I am all powerful.
He has promised to wait for me…whenever…
In case I need him; and I expect I will—
As I always have.
He is my dog.
