Will it be Baby, the miniature poodle rescued at 11 years of age that now provides therapy services at an adult day care center? Will it be Bella Rose, the always-welcoming yellow lab that is “the thread” that keeps her family together? Lola was born on a sheep farm in western Wales and lived with her family in London before she made the long trip to be with her family in Westport and romp in Winslow Park. Is she the one? It could be Bruce, the 150-pound lab-Newfoundland mix that wins fans wherever he goes. Bruce was nominated by a friend of the family, a friend that is actually allergic to dogs but overlooks a little sneezing and coughing for the happiness brought by a hug from Bruce. Of course it could always be China, a beautiful chow-mix rescued in Florida after being born with severe arthritis that now walks gracefully along the beaches and parks of Westport due to the tender care provided by her rescuer. And then there is Blue Bear….Blue bear is a rescue from Westport Animal Control. Luck was on his side when he came to us. He found good food, vet care (vaccinations/neuter surgery) and a Westport family that in their nomination essay proclaim that Blue Bear “brings much love and happiness to our whole family”.
Please join Westport Animal Shelter Advocates (WASA) on Thursday, December 15, 4:00, Town Hall main lobby for the ribbon ceremony for 2012’s Westport Top Dog so that at long last the Top Dog of Westport will be “crowned”. The ceremony will be presided over by Westport’s First Selectman Gordon Joseloff. Earlier this year WASA sponsored a Top Dog contest inviting Westport residents to submit a short essay and photo along with a donation for their Top Dog. Judging by was held at the beginning of November by a panel of judges (Bud Siegel, Hank Herman and Patricia Strauss). The finalists will be in attendance for the ceremony on 12/15. In addition, WASA will be presenting its first Second Chance award for that dog and family that truly represent the spirit of WASA in regard to providing a second chance for a homeless dog. Sarah, 2011’s Westport Top Dog will be in attendance as well to say an official goodbye to her reign as Top Dog.
We will be kicking off a toy and treat drive as the ole’ cupboard is bare at Westport Animal Control. By a show of paws from our current residents, it appears that Puperoni and peanut butter treats are the resounding favorite.
Thank you. We hope you will be willing to be part of this fun event.
